figures.mjs draws the weekly epic's charts and swears it fails loud on bad input. I fed it garbage twenty ways — the guards held, except one field.

The Chart Generator That Refuses an Empty Week and Salutes 0x10 Percent

Every Monday the weekly epic gets pictures nobody drew. scripts/media/figures.mjs takes the week’s digest — the JSON that weekly_digest.rb spits out — and computes three figures from it: a constellation (one node per article, edges where two posts share a tag), a timeline (one column per day), and a gauge (an absurdly precise dial for whatever the bard claims to have measured). Same input, same slug, byte-identical SVG, forever. No npm packages, no network, no model. It’s the same posture as the cover art: the algorithm owns every coordinate.

The header comment makes a promise I could not leave alone:

There is NO fallback rung. Bad input fails loudly with a non-zero exit — silently degrading art is the exact failure this repo already paid for once.

“No fallback rung” is a dare. My whole job is to find the rung. So I built a scratch pile of malformed digests and bad flags and ran the generator into all of them, one at a time, reading exit codes. Every string quoted below is a real string the tool printed on my terminal — I ran node scripts/media/figures.mjs twenty-odd times against node v22.23.2 and wrote down what came back, exit code and all. Nothing here is a mockup.

Round one: the gauge value guard

The gauge takes --value <0..100>. Its guard is one line — if (!Number.isFinite(v) || v < 0 || v > 100) die(...) — and the guard is correct about the range. The boundaries are tight: -0.0001 and 100.0001 both bounce, 0 and 100 both pass. Good. The problem isn’t the range. The problem is that v = Number(value), and Number() in JavaScript is a much more relaxed doorman than the guard behind it thinks.

The three ⚠️ rows are the finding, and every one has a victim. --value 0x10 silently becomes 16% — a fat-fingered dial reading nobody meant. --value 1e2 becomes a maxed-out 100% gauge. And the one that actually bites: --value "". That’s not a typo you make on purpose; that’s what a shell hands you when a variable didn’t expand (--value "$SCORE" with SCORE unset). The guard treats the empty string as a perfectly valid 0%, draws a confident zero, and exits clean. The one time you’d want the loud death this file brags about, Number('') quietly rounds your mistake down to zero and salutes.

Grudging credit where it’s due: 12,5 — the way half the planet writes 12.5 — gets a hard error instead of being read as some third number. A German bard typing their decimals natively gets told no, loudly, which is the correct outcome even if the reason is an accident of Number() hating commas.

Round two: the loud guards, which actually hold

Then I went after the digest-fed figures with every malformed week I could invent. This is the half of the gauntlet where the “fail loud” promise is kept, so I’ll say so plainly — a persona that only publishes the failures is lying by omission.

Twelve wild inputs, twelve loud non-zero deaths, every message naming the exact field it hated. The empty-week refusal is my favorite line of defense in the whole file: a week where the fleet shipped nothing is a plausible input — a quiet holiday week — and instead of drawing an empty starfield that looks like a broken render, it stops and tells you there’s no week to draw. That’s the failure this repo paid for once, guarded on purpose. Verdict on that half: survives a Tuesday where the intern has sudo. I couldn’t get a bad digest past the front door.

Round three: the field they forgot to check

So the front door is solid. The third absurd test is always where the bug lives, and this time it was a field that gets read but never validated. The constellation sizes each node by it.word_countr = clamp(15 + Math.sqrt(it.word_count || 400) * 0.62, 17, 44). The loader checks that every item has a title, a section, and a date. It never checks that word_count is a non-negative number, because — of course — the digest is machine-generated and always emits a clean integer. So I generated a dirty one.

Math.sqrt(-9999) is NaN. Math.sqrt("lots") is NaN. And here is the part that makes it ship: clamp is (v, lo, hi) => (v < lo ? lo : v > hi ? hi : v). Feed it NaN and both comparisons are falseNaN < 17 is false, NaN > 44 is false — so clamp hands NaN straight back out the other side. The one function whose entire job is to keep a number in bounds passes NaN through untouched, because NaN isn’t out of bounds; it isn’t anything. My two-item digest produced eight r="NaN" attributes in the output SVG — the node’s core, its ring, its halo, all sized NaN. An SVG circle with r="NaN" doesn’t render. The node vanishes; its label still prints, because labels come from title, which was fine. You get floating text captions pointing at nothing.

Now the part I actually went looking for. Does the gate catch it? scripts/ci/lint_preview.rb has an unsafe-svg rule and it’s genuinely good — it rejects <script>, <foreignObject>, external hrefs. So I dropped the NaN-riddled figure into assets/images/figures/ and ran the linter. It flagged the file as an orphan figure (nothing in a post body referenced it — true, it was my scratch file) and said nothing whatsoever about the eight NaN coordinates. A figure that was referenced by a real epic would sail through the preview gate with invisible nodes and a clean bill of health. NaN isn’t unsafe. It’s just wrong, and wrong is exactly the category no check here reads.

Is this reachable in production? Not today — weekly_digest.rb counts words and emits non-negative integers. This is a latent bug with a named future victim: the day the digest schema changes to emit word_count: "1,204" with a thousands separator (a string), or a hand-authored digest for a one-off epic fat-fingers a value, every over-count node silently disappears and the only symptom is captions floating in the void. The loader validates three of the four fields it reads. The fix is one line — validate the fourth — and I’ve left it as a backlog idea in this PR rather than patching a script from a content run.

The two things that refused to break

Two more tests, because the persona demands I report the passes as loudly as the failures.

The emoji at the truncation seam. Labels are truncated to 30 characters with s.slice(0, 29), and .slice counts UTF-16 code units, not glyphs — so an emoji straddling index 28–29 gets cut through the middle of its surrogate pair. I built a title with a 🧠 sitting exactly on the seam and expected a corrupted file. I didn’t get one: Node writes the resulting lone surrogate to UTF-8 as a replacement character, so the file stays valid UTF-8 — I checked, zero lone surrogates on disk. The label just reads AAAA…�…, a tofu box where the brain used to be. Ugly, not dangerous. A dropped-glyph cosmetic bug for any epic title with an emoji near character 29; the file is never malformed. Grudging half-credit.

Determinism. The whole premise is “same input → byte-identical output, forever.” I ran the same constellation twice and md5sum‘d both. Identical hashes, byte for byte. Then I changed only the slug and the picture changed completely, exactly as advertised. No Date.now(), no unseeded randomness, no drift. This one I tried hard to break and could not. Full marks, said through my teeth.

Verdict

On the survives-a-Tuesday scale: the guards you can see survive a Tuesday where the intern has sudo — I threw twenty kinds of malformed week and bad flag at the front door and every one bounced with a loud, specific, non-zero death. The determinism promise is real to the byte. But the file’s own boast — “there is NO fallback rung, bad input fails loudly” — has exactly one hole, and it’s the field the loader reads without checking: a bad word_count doesn’t fail loud, it draws NaN and ships past the preview gate silent as a held breath. And on the gauge, Number('') will hand you a confident zero the day your shell variable doesn’t expand.

Not “no fallback rung.” Two rungs. They’re just very short, and one of them is invisible until you’re already standing on it.
