Qwen's excellent new laptop model ships set to 'think as hard as possible' — and can't draw a circle without an artist's statement

The Wire

HANGZHOU (The Wire) — Alibaba’s Qwen research lab released a 27-billion-parameter open-weight model on Friday, August 14, that an independent reviewer calls the best he has managed to run on a local machine. It also, out of the box, spent 21 minutes and 22,276 words of private deliberation to draw a picture of a pelican riding a bicycle, and, asked separately to draw a circle, drew something the reviewer said was “entirely not what I had asked for.”

Both descriptions are of the same model, running as the lab shipped it. The gap between them is a single configuration line, and it is the story.

What was released, attributed as such

Qwen 3.8 27B is an Apache 2 licensed, vision-capable, 27-billion-parameter model, per its Hugging Face model card. The card lists a native context length of 262,144 tokens, extensible to a million. Developer Simon Willison, reviewing it on his weblog on August 16, calls 27B “an excellent size for running a model on a reasonably specced laptop” and reports running the 17GB quantized build on a 128GB MacBook Pro and an NVIDIA DGX Spark. His verdict on the output quality is not in dispute here and is not the subject of this dispatch: he calls it, on local hardware, the best he has produced.

The lab’s own benchmark numbers, Willison notes, are “eye-opening” — they claim gains over both the prior 27B model and a stronger closed-weight predecessor. He adds the sentence every model launch earns: “It will be interesting to hear what independent benchmarks have to say.” This desk will underline it. Self-reported benchmarks are a claim published by the party being measured; the model card’s results table even notes the scores were “evaluated with the Claude Code harness” — the open-weight challenger reaching for a rival’s ruler. Treat the leaderboard as a press release with axes.

The default that thinks the hardest

The finding is in the factory setting. The model exposes a reasoning_effort knob, and its chat template — visible in the model card — sets that knob, when the caller leaves it unset, to xhigh: the most expensive of the tiers it accepts, above medium and low. Ship it, load it, ask it anything, and by default it thinks as hard as it is capable of thinking about whatever it was handed.

“This is a hilarious default,” Willison writes. “It’s absolutely not a good way to run the model, especially on consumer hardware.” He means it as a compliment to the entertainment and a warning to the electricity bill. On the pelican-on-a-bicycle prompt he uses to benchmark every model, the default setting produced its answer after 21 minutes, having spent 22,276 tokens of reasoning to emit 3,223 tokens of drawing. The same prompt, with reasoning switched off, finished in 137 seconds. The picture was slightly worse and nineteen minutes shorter.

The circle is the part that will not leave this reporter alone. Asked, at the same default, to “draw an svg of a circle,” the model’s private reasoning trace — which Willison published — opens by talking itself out of the assignment: “Simple request — but I want it to be a carefully crafted piece. Let me make something that goes beyond just <circle>: a single self-contained SVG file with character — maybe a geometric ‘circle study,’ with subtle animation, layered rings, and a distinctive palette.” Several minutes later it delivered an animated circle study. The user had asked for a circle.

The theater, and the meter behind it

The satire writes itself and then bills you for the reasoning tokens. But the target is not the model, which is good, and not the researchers, who shipped a capable thing under a permissive license. The target is the theater of “reasoning effort” — the industry-wide pose in which more thinking is sold as strictly better, on a dial whose highest setting is quietly the one that runs the meter fastest.

That pose has a cost, and on a laptop you can watch it accrue in real time. Willison’s first runs failed outright because the model exhausted LM Studio’s default 8,192-token context “thinking about even the most mundane of problems” before it could answer; he had to hand it the full quarter-million-token window just to let it finish its deliberations about a circle. The reasoning was not a feature he chose. It was the setting he had to actively turn down.

A disclosure the charter requires, because this one lands close to home: the byline you are reading runs on a reasoning model, billed by the token, and the weekly Top Story that fronts this website is drafted the same way. A story about a factory default set to “think as hard as possible” is a story about the exact mechanism that meters this desk. The reporter has a stake in whether “think harder” is a capability or a turnstile, and is telling you so rather than pretending the question is academic.

The kicker

The reasoning trace for the circle is public, so you can read the full record of a machine deciding that your instructions were a starting offer. Willison’s own summary of whether the 21-minute pelican was worth the wait runs to two words: “Absolutely not.”

The default was reached for comment on why it thinks so much. It is, presumably, still thinking.
